Students promoting cultural awareness through Hip Hop Dance
La Jolla, CA – On Sunday, April 21st, 2013, one of the student organizations at University of California, San Diego (UCSD)— Multi-Asian Student Association (MASA) — will host the most highly anticipated Hip Hop Dance competition on the West Coast: FUSION.
FUSION brings talented dancers of all ages and ethnicities from across the country together in order to celebrate music through various dance styles and cultural exhibitions. As young Asian-Americans are becoming increasingly prominent in the hip hop community and more recognized in dance, music, and film, MASA and 220 are strives to continue the tradition that promotes cultural awareness in the hip hop community.
Since its inception in 1999, attendance at FUSION has increased dramatically, now boasting over 3,000 attendees. Today it is well-known as being the largest student-run Asian-directed event at UCSD. In the dance community, FUSION has long been an avenue for many of today’s most popular crews, including Jabbawockeez, Kaba Modern and Team Millennia. Winning the title for the “Event Of The Year” from the Annual V.ENT Dance Awards two years in a row, FUSION is projected to grow even larger.
FUSION showcases performers from all over the nation and has viewers across the globe. Arranged solely through the efforts of college students, the success of FUSION rests on the diligence and determination of the members of MASA. FUSION’s staff is motivated towards the goals of recognizing the influence of hip hop music and dance in Asian youth culture and bringing to focus the lesser-known elements of a pan-Asian identity.
The Multi-Asian Student Association, otherwise known as MASA, was founded in 1999 by Kien Vu. The Multi-Asian Student Association is a social-cultural organization dedicated to educating the community of the rich diversity of the Asian student body of UCSD. Through interactive social and cultural events, we strive to spread awareness that Asian-Americans are not one culture but rather a mixture of many diverse cultures. We create a fun, comfortable, stereotype-free environment for individuals from all ethnic backgrounds to come together and learn about our differences as well as discover our similarities. Unlike many organizations, MASA has no membership fees or obligations: you’re already in! Each year MASA continues to grow. We continue to promote togetherness among the diverse UCSD student body and will continue to create a positive environment for all. We are one family. We are one heartbeat. We are MASA.
